Navigating 2025: Supply Chain Predictions for EV Transition

As we close out 2024 and look to 2025, supply chain dynamics continue evolving in step with automotive innovation. The global pandemic redefined what is “normal” across every sector, and the automotive industry is no exception. Nearly five years since the pandemic upheaval, supply chain disruptions remain a significant challenge, marking an era of resilience and recalibration in post-pandemic business operations.

Supply chain issues were among the highest profile complications during the pandemic. Although there's been considerable stabilization, these issues persist, creating ongoing challenges for industries worldwide and forcing companies to look forward with a future-ready approach.

This is especially true in the automotive sector, where the waning pandemic coincided with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and Industry 4.0. These developments have added complexities and new challenges to an industry still working to overcome disruptions, rebuild operational resilience, and mitigate risk.

Like the industry itself, this is a revolution. As new EV market entrants and a shifting global regulatory landscape emerge, Tier 1 suppliers like Magna are establishing and developing relationships with these new entities, helping them meet regulatory and compliance measures while managing their integration into our supply chains.

Magna focuses on innovation and managing capacity within our established supply chains for ongoing vehicle programs, improving visibility for better transparency and traceability. By enhancing monitoring, predictive modeling, and crisis management, we embed resiliency in our supply chain. We also take a risk-based approach to sourcing, including dual sourcing and onshoring, to mitigate risks and promote continuity.

To enhance resilience for all our customers, we are utilizing the latest technologies for risk management. This is supported by new contract terms, supplier performance requirements, increased transparency, and comprehensive end-to-end supply chain management. Additionally, we have implemented next-level sustainability requirements within our supply chain utilizing M2030 and NQC/SAQ to address Scope 3 carbon reduction targets and better assess opportunities for improvement.

Today's conversations with OEMs are markedly different from those a decade ago. However, the focus remains on building resilience throughout the supply chain—from establishing supply bases and setting contract terms to promoting supply-demand transparency.

We are uniquely positioned to support both legacy and new OEMs with integration capabilities virtually unmatched in the supplier field. Our systems, technology, and training equip us to handle the EV shift, fostering resilience and mitigating risks as we move forward with new customers and programs.

2025 promises to be a year where supply chain adaptability is key. Magna remains focused on building resilience into our supply chains, helping us meet the diverse requirements of our customers. With the right technology, talent, and experience, we are prepared to navigate these evolving challenges.

The world is different than it was five years ago, but embracing change has always been Magna's strength. We look forward to driving continued resilience and innovation in 2025 and beyond.
