Materials Matter: Building Tomorrow's Mobility with Purpose

In today's automotive landscape, sustainability is not a trend, but a must. At Magna, we believe materials are a key lever in building the next generation of vehicles. That's why we've embedded sustainability into every layer of our material strategy. Four central development areas characterize our materials strategy and show how innovation and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.

  • Focus on recycled, renewable and low-impact materials
  • Integration of sustainability into early-stage product development
  • Tangible CO2 reductions through smart material engineering
  • Scalable solutions ready for series production
  • Integrated product engineering focused on sustainability and enhancing vehicle efficiency

Circular Materials -
Designed for Reuse

Instead of consuming new resources, Magna relies on high-quality materials that can be used several times. Our highly recycled aluminum alloys or steel components with secondary material content show how energy consumption and CO2 emissions can be massively reduced - while maintaining the same performance.

Aural 5R and 2R

Aural 5R & 2R aluminum alloy are made entirely from recycles aluminum. This means saving 95% energy and 80% CO2 compared to virgin material, while maintaining the same strength and performance.

Renewable Materials -
Natural Innovation

Components made from natural fibers or recycled textile material prove that sustainability and performance are not a contradiction in terms. The use of plant-based polymers and biological fiber composites saves weight, reduces the environmental impact - and at the same time offers new design possibilities.

Sustainable Door Carrier

Magna's patented door carrier uses natural fiber sheets, optionally pressed with a sustainable mesh inlay, sealed and reinforced with a plant-based polyurethane spray. Comprising 70-90% sustainable materials, it is 30-40% lighter and four times more impact resistant than a traditional car door.

End-of-Life Recyclability -
Built for Recovery

True sustainability considers what happens at the end. Our recyclable solutions, like the EcoSphere™ seat system, are engineered to simplify material recovery. No disassembly needed. Just smart design that makes recycling practical and scalable across millions of vehicles.

EcoSphere™ Seating Technology

Magna's EcoSphere™ is a 100% melt-recyclable foam and seat trim solution, enabling recycling without disassembly. This innovation marks a milestone in recycling the 150 million seats produced annually, where currently only steel structures are recycled due to the complexity of the material mixtures.

Embedded Eco-Design -
Sustainability from the Start

Magna evaluates how to reduce the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. Tool like life cycle assessments, CO2 footprinting, recyclability assessments and modular design strategies result in a product design that save resources and reduces emissions. Our engineeirng services help OEMs to integrate ecological criteria into their projects at an early stage.
